I’d like to introduce the literacy system that I created. I used the technology in PowerPoint to create a computerized fluency and comprehension system for middle school students that is modeled after award-winning software, . The system is aligned to both the Common Core standards and the Indiana Academic standards and includes the following:
Fluency- Students must read a story before the words disappear off of the screen. Students have the option of selecting the red speed (slow), yellow speed (medium) or green speed (fast). Students may then read the passage again (repeated reading!) or move on to the comprehension assessment. Optional: Students can listen to the selection before the fluency work begins.

Comprehension-Students respond to multiple choice questions modeled after the questions on the new generation of College and Career Ready Assessments. Built-in supports provide the students with hints so that they know which part of the passage to reread in order to arrive at the correct answer.

Extended Response Item-In keeping with the new generation of assessments, the extended response item is related to the passage and requires students to synthesize and connect ideas.
